This pumps cold water through a “header” on the roof that is connected to glass tubes absorbing heat from the sun and has a heat transfer from tubes to the header, where the water is then pumped back down to the tank on the ground. These systems are great if space is limited on the roof.
A third solar hot water option is the heat pump hot water system. These systems do not necessarily use the direct sun for solar generation as they utilise a condenser plumbed into storage hot water. Instead, these systems absorb the ambient solar heat, and through a heat exchanger inside the compressor, they transfer heat which is pumped back into the tank for extremely cheap and reliable hot water.
