Designed for Canberra homes

The Energy People supplies and installs a full range of solar hot water systems suitable for your Canberra home.

If you are looking to introduce a renewable energy source to your home, a solar hot water system can minimise your carbon footprint and reduce your energy costs. From Rheem Highlines to Rinnai and Apricus Evacuated Tube systems, we have you covered.

Reduce Your Energy Expenses

Water heating can account for up to 40% of an average home’s energy use. Using a renewable energy source, such as solar, to heat water can reduce your energy bills and minimise the environmental impact of your home.

Invest in the renewable energy of your home with The Energy People, who can supply and install your solar hot water system in the Canberra region.

How Does a Solar Hot Water System Work?

Eco-friendly and energy-efficient, solar hot water systems use the sun’s energy to heat water and are generally designed to store more hot water than conventional systems.

Solar hot water systems are available in both roof and ground-mounted systems, ranging from whole-roof-mounted systems with electric or gas backup boosters for days when the sun doesn’t shine.

FAQs

How does a solar hot water system work?

A solar hot water system uses energy from the sun to heat water for household use, which can be achieved in many ways. Solar collectors or panels attached to a storage tank can absorb solar energy via heat transfer fluid.

The heated fluid is then self-syphoned from the collectors to a heat exchanger in the storage tank. After that, the heat exchanger will transfer the heat from the fluid to the water in the tank, dramatically reducing hot water heating costs.

On the other hand, other solar hot water systems, such as an evacuated tube solar hot water, work by having a circulation pump. This pumps cold water through a “header” on the roof that is connected to glass tubes absorbing heat from the sun and has a heat transfer from tubes to the header, where the water is then pumped back down to the tank on the ground. These systems are great if space is limited on the roof.

A third solar hot water option is the heat pump hot water system. These systems do not necessarily use the direct sun for solar generation as they utilise a condenser plumbed into storage hot water. Instead, these systems absorb the ambient solar heat, and through a heat exchanger inside the compressor, they transfer heat which is pumped back into the tank for extremely cheap and reliable hot water.

How long does it take to install a solar energy system?

This will depend on the system you have installed on your property. The Energy People specialises in installing solar panels, which can take around one to two days, depending on the size of your roof and the specific requirements for your solar panel build. If you’re looking to install a solar hot water system, installation usually takes half a day.

What do I need to know before I install a solar hot water system?

Before installing a solar hot water system, there are several factors you should consider to ensure the unit is the right fit for your household. For instance, it’s a good idea to assess your property’s solar potential to determine if there is adequate sunlight for a solar hot water system. You should also assess your hot water usage to determine the storage tank size and the number of collectors required. Our experienced team can help you determine this.

What are the benefits of a solar hot water system?

One of the biggest benefits of installing a solar hot water system is that it can significantly reduce your energy bills, as you will use the sun’s rays to heat your water, rather than relying on your electricity provider. Solar hot water systems also reduce your carbon footprint, require minimal servicing and can increase the value of your property, as they are usually considered a valuable asset.
