The heat pump draws heat from the ambient air through an evaporator. Thermal energy in the air is transferred to the liquid refrigerant, changing it to gas. The gas is compressed, increasing the pressure and temperature. The gas then transfers its heat to the water tank which heats the water. As it loses its heat, the gas returns to a liquid state and the pressure is reduced through an expansion valve. This process then starts again.
